The Dance of Joy just doesn’t let up! Here’s Sitka dancing with a butterfly:

Maestro please…

(Dancing Madly Backwards by Captain Beyond from their 1972 debut album.)

I was thinking Iron Butterfly because these butterflies are tough ass motherfuckers! I swear they must eat ice and mud or some such thing. But the only song from the lads of Iron Butterfly that might be appropriate is Ina-gadda-da-vida, which we’ve all heard a million times, so I selected this piece from Captain Beyond instead. Captain Beyond was first formed in 1971 as a supergroup comprised of two ex-Iron Butterfly members, a Deep Purple alumni and a fellow from Johnny Winter’s group. This most appropriate song was released in that ever-so-pivotal year of 1972. I bet most of you have never heard it before. You’re welcome.

We’ve seen at least a dozen butterflies this spring already. Other than the crocuses depicted in our last post, there’s nary a flower out there, so how they get their sustenance is a bit of a mystery. I think maybe they’ve mastered the art of living on “sunshine and love, baby!”

Sitka really wants to learn to fly, and I think butterfly is an appropriate teacher, since their odd construction resembles aerial contraptions from before the Wright brothers. How do those things fly anyway? I myself am thinking about strapping a couple of Picasso canvases to my arms and joining them.

We don’t have time to mourn any caterpillars. The time of unabashed gluttony is over. I’m ready to savour joy with my feet. How about you?
