Independently Healthy: Just a Few Reminders

by nielskunze on January 21, 2014

Several of my longtime readers have expressed frustration that I’m no longer issuing my monthly health missives now that the Newsletter is dedicated solely to the completion of the Muse Trilogy. I had thought that I might be able to address relevant health concerns through the Daily Forest Reports, but the style of writing therein employed is too “dense” or symbolic for such purposes. When it comes to our own health, clarity and directness is most appropriate. So keep an eye on the blog, and I will periodically offer up new “Independently Healthy” pieces as the need appears to arise. Let us begin…

Perhaps some folks really enjoy getting sick. They must… because I continually find myself repeating the very same preventative “medicines” in the advice I freely offer. There will be really very little of new information covered here to today, but sometimes a timely reminder is all we need, eh? (So Canadian!)

In the way of providing context, allow me to properly begin by stating a few stats from my own health history. The last time I was sick was in July of 2011. I had the flu– the only time I’ve ever had the flu in my 47 years. (For the record, I have never accepted a flu shot, and have no plans to ever start. I firmly believe that the statement currently running in television ads in Canada this flu season that says “The flu shot is your best protection for fighting the flu” is an idiotic bold-faced lie!) Prior to my one bout with influenza two-and-a-half years ago I had a cold which lasted 5 days in the winter of 2008. Additionally, I have been a member of the workforce since I was 15, and in 32 years I have never missed a day of work due to illness. My point is that diligent prevention works!… in my experience.

The most important factor, which I can’t seem to repeat often enough, is for everyone to optimize their vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is a hormonal activator and enabler of overall immunity. When vitamin D is low, the immune system is compromised. Period. You can do everything else perfectly from a health perspective, but if you are vitamin D deficient, your immunity will suffer. For six months of the year, when the sun’s intensity is incapable of stimulating adequate natural vitamin D, I supplement orally– every single freakin’ day!

For the last two years I’ve been taking 5,000 IU per day in the winter months. Prior to that I was taking 2,000 to 3,000 IU per day but felt that it was still inadequate. Mike Adams, the editor of the Natural News, reportedly takes 10,000 IU per day. The recommended daily allowance is in the neighborhood of 1,000 IU per day– which is not nearly enough in my experience-based opinion. Also, Dr. Mercola has stated that it is safe to take up to 50,000 IU a day for three consecutive days when faced with an acute infection. Yes, it IS possible to take too much vitamin D, but you’d really have to be a dedicated and reckless fanatic to do yourself serious harm… unless you have some rare metabolic issues concerning vitamin D metabolism.

Oral supplements of vitamin D3 (the recommended form of the vitamin) are extraordinarily cheap. I purchased a bottle containing 365 gel caps at 5,000 IU for about $20. Since I only take them in the winter months, that’s a two-year supply! At ten dollars a year there’s really no excuses.

Ever since I adopted the 5,000 IU a day regimen I feel that I haven’t even come close to getting sick. A couple of times I felt the first hint of scratchiness in the back of my throat and immediately popped an extra gel cap, and the next day all was perfectly fine again.

It’s not just about colds and flu though. Any type of infection, whether a festering wound or a persistent skin rash or an overgrowth of nasty bacteria or yeast, will be arrested by an optimally functioning immune system. And vitamin D is the most basic foundation for immunity. Ignore this information at your peril!

At the first signs of sickness nearly everyone thinks of vitamin C. I very rarely take a vitamin C supplement– and never just straight ascorbic acid. I will always just take a full spectrum vitamin C complex with all of its natural co-factors intact. I really try to get all the vitamin C I require from foods, not supplements. If I’m specifically trying to boost my vitamin C, my preferred choice is camu camu berry powder– the best choice in my opinion.

While we’re on the topic of supplementation, I can state that over the past two decades I have experimented with hundreds of them. Vitamin and nutrition companies often like to make some very bold claims, and I’m the kind of guy who likes to put them to the test. After having tried literally hundreds of supplements and so-called superfoods, I am comfortable reporting that I have found just a handful of them to be truly beneficial in a clearly discernible way.

The only supplements (not foods) that I take on a regular basis, besides vitamin D in the winter, are weekly vitamin B12 patches and ubiquinol (the reduced form of CoQ10). That’s it. I do however make a point of ingesting some incredibly nutritious foods nearly every day.

A recent personal discovery of one such food is moringa leaf powder. From the very first spoonful I knew that this was a food for me. Moringa, if you’ve never heard of it, is perhaps the overall most nutritious plant known to man. There’s heaps of info on the internet about it if you’re interested. For me, just from the taste alone, I knew that I’d be having a teaspoon every morning from now on. I take it along with my half teaspoon of pine pollen and 1g of krill oil. Right there, my tiny breakfast has more nutrition packed into a mere mouthful than a hearty traditional morning meal… and it keeps me going until the evening when I eat my only full meal of the day. (I do forage during my walks in the summer months in the afternoons though.)

For anyone interested in foods that are specific for increasing immunity, here’s the short list: Chaga, reishi, shiitake, maitake, cordyceps, beta glucans, probiotics, fermented veggies, reishi spore oil, oregano oil and fulvic acid. I don’t think a single day goes by that I don’t take at least one of these… usually more.

Okay, that covers some of the essentials for nutrition-based preventative medicine. And that brings us to the real impetus for writing this article in the first place. The other side of prevention is cleansing. If you’re all clogged up with gunk and crud, especially at the cellular level, all that fancy nutrition isn’t going to do much good– some, but not much.

This section begins with an observation I had recently. I noticed that my morning bowel movements always smelled strongly metallic whenever I had eaten chlorella and spirulina the evening before. I often have a tablespoon of spirulina and another of chlorella with my glass of whole-lemon lemonade… along with two tablespoons of hemp hearts. The metallic smell is especially significant in light of the recent findings published at the Natural News which has begun to reveal the alarming levels of various heavy metals in our common food supply. One of the most interesting factors is that the most elevated levels of heavy metals occur in organic foods and superfoods which are normally thought of as being “clean.” The supposed reason that heavily processed foods are relatively free from heavy metal contamination is because the metals are processed out along with all the nutrients during manufacturing. So, such foods are nutritionally barren and have their own toxic elements added, but at least they’re relatively free from dangerous heavy metals. The bottom line here is that even those professing to have a healthy diet may be getting inadvertently poisoned by metal contaminants.

Therefore, I recommend that everyone do something in their routine health protocols to address this significant threat. Spirulina and chlorella are well known for their detoxifying efficacy… and my own experience attests to this. (The metallic smell arises from the metals being pulled by the algae from my system.) Another cleansing technique I occasionally employ is urine enemas. Yes, you read that right. I collect about a quart of my own urine over the course of a day, warm it up to body temperature and use it as an enema which deeply cleanses and hydrates the colon. I had recently been suffering from lower back pain for several days which was instantly relieved by a 20-minute shiatsu session from my very skilled roommate followed by a urine enema. Bye-bye heavy metals.

I just thought of one other supplement that I take periodically that has a great deal to do with proper detoxification: magnesium. It is estimated that at least 90% of the North American population is magnesium deficient. Magnesium is essential to hundreds of elimination (detoxification) pathways in the human system. Many oral magnesium supplements are practically useless, so the form I prefer is a spray-on liquid which I use after every shower. The brand I like is Ancient Minerals. My skin tends to drink the stuff in nearly instantly.

There currently seems to be a consensus among the lightworker community that now is an especially significant time for detoxification. If we’re engaged in the evolutionary narrative of these apocalyptic times, it makes sense that in order to grasp and utilize our “new” potentials we first have to clear out the heaps of debris that they may be buried beneath. If we’re serious about wanting change, we have to make room for such changes… and clearing out the trash is just good common sense. Personally, I like to cleanse on an almost continuous basis, incorporating it into my regular routine. That way I don’t have to go through extreme cleansing rituals and reactions which can be very uncomfortable indeed.

Take care of yourself, Lightworker. You agreed before incarnating that you would undergo this “recalibration”… as an example to others. Please do it sensibly and with diligence. You don’t have to suffer… much. That is all.
