To most, the proliferation of the tree lichen Old Man’s Beard– also known as usnea– among the forest undergrowth makes the woods seem creepy. As usual, appearances can be deceiving.

Usnea is definitely beneficial to forest creatures, including humans. (Yes, I consider myself to be a forest creature now.) It is a scientifically verified antibiotic and anti-fungal. And it is not particularly damaging to the trees in which it resides.

As I listened to what Usnea had to teach this day, I was thankful for the tips and reminders about health, and was really quite astonished by the more “cosmic” insights provided by Usnea’s overview.

“The changing of the seasons brings physical challenges of adaptation into the human form. As your energy reserves and channels rearrange themselves to meet your fluctuating needs, sickness often creeps in… through the gaps in your shifting form. Learn to fortify your human form before the challenges arise.

“I am both remedy and preventative… according to your own choice. Prevention is almost always superior to remedial strategies. It seems nearly all humans know the importance of vitamin C during cold and flu season; I am rich in vitamin C. However, even more important for proper immune function is the sunshine vitamin– D.

“In winter months it is virtually impossible to acquire adequate sun exposure in order to manufacture appropriate levels of vitamin D in the body. Oral supplementation becomes necessary. Squirrel is wise to such needs, as he gathers mushrooms to sun-dry in the branches of trees. Mushrooms contain significant stores of vitamin D, especially if they’ve been dried upside-down in the sun.

“For thousands of years, humanity has chosen a remedial existence. What this means is that collectively you have chosen to remain in a reactionary mode. You’ve typically dealt with circumstances after they have been presented to you. By nature, you are pre-emptive creatures.

“Circumstances are yours to select, manipulate or outright create. You were never meant to be reactionary creatures– dealing endlessly with that which has been foisted upon you. When Jesus said “Get thee behind me, Satan!” perhaps he was attempting to turn you around on this.

“Humanity’s collective has chosen to release the reactionary mode. It stands now at the forefront of your ability to create the experience you desire. Take action before action is required. You have long been a few steps behind your true nature. Step up and step into your ‘new’ and rightful roles Now.”
